Leeds is fast becoming one of the most exciting and dynamic cities in the UK. And during the festive period it’s that bit more special, with the arrival of the famous Christkindel German market and streets filled with gleaming lights and impressive Christmas decorations.
We’ve picked out some of the best things to do when visiting Leeds this Christmas.
Leeds has one of the most established festive markets in the country. Each year the traditional wooden stalls fill the floor at Millennium Square selling authentic hand crafted gifts, through to speciality foods and traditional German delicacies, not forgetting the mulled wine!
This year the famous beer tent has been replaced by a Viking Tipi tent packed with cosy log fires, fire pits and a heated outdoor area with barbeque which promises fun for all the family. The Thor’s Viking Tipi is located outside Leeds Art Gallery, in Victoria Gardens and will be open daily from 18 November to 31 December (excluding Christmas Day).
If you don’t mind venturing out of the city centre, from Friday 16 December to Thursday 22nd December, less than 3 miles down Kirkstall Road you will discover the Hidden Christmas Market at Kirkstall Abbey. New this year, it promises to deliver a day, or night, of live music acts, surprise performances and food and drink stalls containing festive favourites, all in the impressive grounds of the Abbey. This market is ticketed with adult tickets costing £7.50.
From pantomimes to theatre shows, with so much choice you are sure to find something that will get you in the festive mood.
If you fancy a change from a ‘typical’ pantomime, the Rock’n’Roll Sleeping Beauty Pantomime at City Varieties promises to deliver a high speed, fun production whilst retaining all of the traditional pantomime traits. Cinderella is on at the Carriageworks on Millennium Square, whilst Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs can be seen within the grounds of the former Tetley Brewery at the White Rose Theatre.
If pantomimes aren’t your thing, the Rudolph Play, perfect for the children, will be held at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from Friday 25 November to 31 December.
If you’re visiting Leeds to do your Christmas shopping, with the arrival of the new, long-awaited, £165 million Victoria Gate shopping centre you’re sure to be spoilt for choice! The striking new shopping centre features a five-story John Lewis aswell as a whole host of high end shops and eateries.
Head across the road and you will find the Trinity centre, packed with more than 120 high street stores, or over to the Corn Exchange to trawl a range of quirky independent and vintage stores. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in Leeds!
2 days before Christmas always feels like a good time to reflect on the year we have had, all i can say is that it has been the best year yet!
So many wonderful guests have passed through the doors, old and new, some staying for just one night or some becoming permanent residents, The Chambers really is one big family.
